The first stuff pack for The Sims 4, Luxury Party Stuff, has been announced this week. Oddly enough, the article on the official website went up on 13 May, announcing the release date of 19 May (it’s not on Origin yet but apparently this will be a digital only pack with a simultaneous global release). It feels like a weirdly short window, especially these days when we’re used to hearing about games long before they are released. It’s a pretty clever marketing ploy, though: creating hype for a product and then delivering it the very next week.
What is particularly exciting about this stuff pack is the mention of new gameplay items. In The Sims 2 & 3, stuff packs simply contained, well, stuff, with gameplay items only being added in expansion packs, or the online store, in the case of The Sims 3. So it’s really great that this stuff pack – and hopefully future stuff packs – is including two new gameplay items (a buffet table and a food/drink fountain), especially since The Sims 4 doesn’t have an online store. It also makes stuff packs a lot more attractive to me, as I value gameplay more than stuff (although some of the stuff packs have been great). The price point of $10 is also an improvement over the cost of stuff packs for The Sims 3.
Personally I’d like to see some child and teen related packs (my favourite stuff pack of all time is still The Sims 2 Family Fun Stuff), but new shiny clothes for adults are always welcome. I must admit I thought perhaps they were doing away with stuff packs entirely for The Sims 4, in favour of game packs like Outdoor Retreat, but clearly that’s not the case.
